Itinerary
Note: Daily details may vary slightly due to train timetables, permit time slots, weather conditions, and park regulations—while the route and highlights remain the same.
This 2D/1N itinerary works for both Group and Private trips. The Private Tour includes a private guide and private transfers; train upgrades are available upon request.
Pre-departure briefing (evening before): We’ll meet you at your hotel (typically around 6:00 PM) for a full pre-briefing—confirming passports, train timing, permits, safety protocols, and a final gear check. This is also when you’ll receive your IPA duffel bag (5 kg / 10 lb limit) and your rain poncho + daypack rain cover (return required at the end of the trip).
We’ll pick you up early from your hotel and transfer to the train station. Morning stop in Ollantaytambo (Breakfast): Before boarding the train, we make a strategic breakfast stop in Ollantaytambo—giving you a relaxed start, time to fuel up, and smoother coordination before the trail. After a scenic ride through the Urubamba Valley, we arrive at Km 104 (Chachabamba)—the starting point of the Short Inca Trail. With passports ready, we check in at the official control point and begin hiking. Your guide will keep the pace comfortable, support you throughout the day, and coordinate your lunch and hydration plan—IPA provides one supply of safe drinking water with your box lunch on-trail support, and we’ll keep the pace comfortable as we climb through the cloud forest.
The trail immediately feels special: lush cloud-forest vegetation, mountain air, and those iconic Inca stone paths. Early on, we visit Chachabamba, a beautiful archaeological complex that once served as a ceremonial gateway to the sanctuary zone. From there, we continue on a steady ascent with incredible views and plenty of opportunities for photos and interpretation along the way.
After several hours on the trail, we reach the legendary Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young)—one of the most impressive sites of the entire Inca Trail, with terraces and structures clinging dramatically to the mountainside. We take time to explore with your guide, enjoy a well-earned lunch, and recharge.
In the afternoon, we continue toward Inti Punku (Sun Gate)—the moment you’ve been waiting for. As you crest the final section, Machu Picchu appears in the distance, framed by the Andes in one of the most unforgettable viewpoints in Peru. From the Sun Gate, we descend into Machu Picchu, arriving later in the day when the crowds are lighter, giving you time to soak it all in before heading down to Aguas Calientes.
We take the bus to Aguas Calientes, check into your hotel, and enjoy dinner together—ending Day 1 with comfort, good food, and that “we really did it” feeling.
