Itinerary

Welcome to Lima, the bustling coastal capital of Peru and the perfect gateway to the wonders of the Andes. Upon arrival at Jorge Chávez International Airport, an Inside Peru Adventures representative will greet you and provide a comfortable private transfer to your hotel located in the vibrant Miraflores or Barranco district.

Today is designed for a smooth and relaxing arrival. Whether you land in the morning or evening, we encourage you to unwind, settle in, and perhaps take a gentle walk along the Malecón, a scenic cliffside promenade overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You may also choose to taste your first Peruvian ceviche or enjoy a refreshing pisco sour at one of Lima’s world-renowned restaurants.

As evening falls, gather with your fellow travelers and your IPA tour leader for a Welcome Dinner, a warm introduction to Peru’s celebrated gastronomy and culture. This shared meal is more than just dinner—it’s your first connection with the group, your tour leader, your guide, and the authentic spirit of Peru that will accompany you throughout your journey.

Arrival Note: We recommend arriving one day before the official itinerary begins, especially if traveling from overseas, to give yourself time to rest and adjust. Early check-in is subject to hotel availability, but you may safely store your luggage and begin exploring at your own pace.

Details:

  • Comfortable Transportation: Travel comfortably and confidently with Inside Peru Adventures.

  • Private Airport Transfer: Included (Jorge Chávez Airport → Hotel) 45m - 1h approx.

  • Meals included: Dinner (Inside Peru Welcome Dinner)

  • Hotel Accommodation: 3 star hotel in Lima (double occupancy)

After a restful night and a nourishing breakfast at your hotel, your journey through the heart of Peru begins. Reunite with your group and tour leader as we dive into the vibrant soul of Lima, exploring the city’s colonial past and deep pre-Columbian heritage.

Begin with a guided walking tour through Colonial Lima, including a visit to the San Francisco Church and its famous catacombs—a haunting yet fascinating glimpse into Lima’s layered history. Stroll through elegant plazas and past grand facades, discovering how Spanish architecture and indigenous resistance shaped this coastal capital.

Midday, we’ll stop at a local restaurant where you can choose your own lunch from a carefully selected menu (meals not included today), giving you a personal introduction to Lima’s world-class cuisine.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit the Larco Museum, one of Latin America's most celebrated collections of pre-Columbian art. Set in a beautiful 18th-century vice-royal mansion surrounded by gardens, the museum offers an inspiring overview of Peru’s ancient civilizations, including its unique Erotic Gallery and exquisite gold, silver, and textile exhibits.

As the day winds down, we return to your hotel. The evening is yours to enjoy—perhaps a walk along the cliffs of Miraflores, some shopping in Barranco, or simply an early night in preparation for tomorrow’s early departure to the Andes.

Note: Rest is recommended this evening, as tomorrow we head to the Sacred Valley and begin our altitude acclimatization.

  • Comfortable Transportation: Travel comfortably and confidently with Inside Peru Adventures.

After an early breakfast at your hotel in Lima, we’ll transfer you to the airport for your short domestic flight to Cusco—the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Upon landing, we won’t stay in the high altitude of the city just yet. Instead, we’ll head directly into the Sacred Valley, which sits at a more comfortable elevation and offers a gentler acclimatization to the Andes.

Your journey into Inca heartlands begins with two of the most extraordinary and photogenic sites in the region:

  • Maras Salt Terraces: A surreal mosaic of over 3,000 shallow salt pools cascading down a mountainside, where local families still harvest salt using ancestral techniques. You'll learn about this sustainable practice and enjoy spectacular panoramic views.

  • Moray Agricultural Lab: Marvel at this unique archaeological site consisting of concentric circular terraces. Believed to be a sophisticated Inca agricultural experimentation center, Moray showcases the empire’s mastery of microclimates and crop adaptation.

After the visit, we’ll continue to your 3-star hotel in Urubamba, where you’ll have time to relax, unpack, and breathe in the fresh Andean air. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner with your tour leader and fellow travelers—a warm moment to share impressions, go over the next day’s plan, and receive important tips about traveling in altitude.

Stroll through the colorful artisan market below, famous for its high-quality textiles, silverwork, and handwoven crafts.

Continue along the Vilcanota River to Urubamba, where you’ll enjoy a delicious buffet lunch featuring a fusion of Andean ingredients and international cuisine.

In the afternoon, explore the spectacular ruins of Ollantaytambo, one of the last living Inca towns. Climb its monumental stone terraces, visit the ancient sun temple, and learn how this fortress once served as a stronghold against the Spanish conquest.

Conclude your day with a relaxing evening at a charming hotel in Ollantaytambo, where cobblestone streets and Inca-built walls still shape the daily lives of locals.

Travel Info

Plan your adventure confidently with essential travel tips, altitude insights, packing advice, and sustainability practices to ensure a safe, enriching, and responsible journey through Peru’s breathtaking geography—from the Pacific coast to the Andean highlands and the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu.
Getting to Cusco

Cusco’s Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) currently receives domestic flights only. All international travelers must first arrive in Lima (Jorge Chávez International Airport), clear immigration and customs, and then check in again for a separate domestic flight—even if flying with the same airline.

✈️ Good News: As part of your Peru Essence package, your round-trip domestic flights Lima ↔ Cusco are already included and booked on your behalf by Inside Peru Adventures.

We use trusted carriers such as LATAM, Avianca or SKY Airline. Keep in mind that high-altitude weather in Cusco can cause occasional delays, so flexibility and patience are helpful when flying to or from the Andes.

Luggage Guidelines & Storage

Even though this is an overnight tour to Machu Picchu by train, luggage restrictions apply due to the limited cargo capacity on the Expedition and Vistadome trains. Each traveler is allowed only one carry-on bag. For your comfort, we strongly recommend bringing only the essentials in a small backpack or duffel.

If you have additional luggage with you in Ollantaytambo, don’t worry—we’ll help you store your bags securely. You can leave them at your hotel or with Inside Peru Adventures’ safe storage facilities. We’ll collect your bags the morning of your tour and return them once you’re back from Machu Picchu.
Make sure each bag is clearly labeled with your name or tag, especially if you’re traveling in a group, to ensure an easy return.

Weather & Packing Tips

Peru’s Andes region features varied microclimates. Here’s what to expect:

  • Dry Season (Best Travel Time): April to October

Sunny days, chilly mornings. Ideal for Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, and mountain hikes.

  • Rainy Season: December to February

More rain, especially in Machu Picchu and Cusco. Landscapes are lush and green. Tours still operate.

  • Shoulder Months (Transitional Weather): March and November

These months often bring a mix of sunny days and occasional rain. Packing for both dry and wet conditions is highly recommended.

Smart Packing Essentials for Peru Essence – Lima to Machu Picchu - 10D/9N

  • Layered Clothing for Changing Climates: From the crisp mornings of Cusco to the humid cloud forest of Aguas Calientes, this journey crosses diverse microclimates. Dress in breathable, quick-dry layers—begin with a thermal base, add a warm fleece, and top with a lightweight waterproof jacket. This versatile system keeps you comfortable from city explorations to archaeological sites.

  • Reliable Sun Protection: UV exposure is strong across all sites, even on cloudy days. Protect yourself with broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 50+), UV-rated sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat—especially when walking through exposed areas like Sacsayhuamán, Pisaq, and Machu Picchu.

  • Compact Rain Gear: Weather in the Andes can shift suddenly. A foldable rain poncho or waterproof jacket is essential—particularly for visits to Aguas Calientes and the citadel of Machu Picchu where humidity and short showers are common even in the dry season.

  • Comfortable Footwear for Walking: Expect cobbled streets, uneven stone paths, and agricultural terraces. Well-worn walking or light hiking shoes with good grip are highly recommended. Avoid new shoes to prevent blisters during site visits.

  • Accessories for Early Starts: Early mornings in Cusco and the Sacred Valley can be chilly. Pack a thermal hat, lightweight gloves, and a scarf—ideal for morning city tours or waiting at the train station.

  • Hydration on the Go: Bring a refillable water bottle or hydration pack to stay energized throughout the day. High-altitude regions can dehydrate you faster. Please help reduce plastic waste by choosing eco-friendly gear. Check your Inclusions section to confirm availability of refill stations.

  • Snacks to Keep You Energized: Pack a few high-energy snacks like protein bars, dried fruit, or trail mix. These will come in handy during your excursions, especially with early departures.

  • Daypack & Entry Requirements: A small daypack (25L max – needed for Machu Picchu) is perfect for your daily essentials: jacket, hat, snacks, water, sunscreen, and your original passport. Note that Machu Picchu only allows small backpacks and requires your original passport (no copies or digital versions accepted) for entry.

First Aid & Safety
  • At Inside Peru Adventures, your well-being comes first. Whether you're exploring the Sacred Valley, trekking the Andes, or visiting remote destinations in the highlands, we ensure your journey is not only unforgettable—but also safe, supported, and professionally managed.

  • Trained & Certified Guides: All of our professional tour guides are certified in first aid and emergency response, with regular training in high-altitude safety, evacuation protocols, and outdoor risk management. This ensures they're fully prepared to handle any situation—from minor injuries to altitude-related discomfort.

  • First-Aid Kits on Every Tour: We carry a fully equipped first-aid kit on every excursion, including supplies for common travel issues such as scrapes, blisters, motion sickness, insect bites, and altitude symptoms.

  • Oxygen & Altitude Support: On all tours that venture above 3,000 m.a.s.l. (9,840 ft)—including popular routes like the Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, Humantay Lagoon Hike, Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley Hike, Lares Trek and Ausangate Trek—our guides are equipped with portable oxygen tanks. They’re trained to monitor and respond to altitude-related symptoms, providing immediate relief when needed.

  • Emergency Transport Access: All our routes are carefully selected not only for beauty and cultural value, but also for emergency accessibility. In the unlikely event of a medical emergency, we have established response plans with local authorities and transport services for rapid evacuation.

Travel Insurance (Highly Recommended)

Why Travel Insurance Matters for Adventure Travel
While Inside Peru Adventures prioritizes safety and preparation on every journey, the nature of adventure travel always carries a degree of unpredictability. For your peace of mind, we highly recommend securing comprehensive travel insurance before your trip.

What Should Your Policy Cover?
When exploring high-altitude regions or remote natural landscapes, make sure your insurance plan includes:

  • Altitude sickness and medical emergencies

  • Trip cancellations or itinerary interruptions

  • Weather-related delays or disruptions

  • Emergency evacuation and repatriation

  • Lost or delayed luggage

  • Coverage for adventure travel activities like trekking, hiking, and off-the-beaten-path exploration

Adventure destinations often involve rugged terrain, high elevation, and changing weather. A proper adventure travel insurance policy ensures you're covered in case of unexpected incidents. We recommend choosing a provider experienced in insuring active travelers and reviewing all terms carefully.

Pro Tip for Trekking Travelers: Not all travel insurance policies automatically cover high-altitude adventures. When choosing a plan, verify that your provider includes coverage for activities above 3,000 m.a.s.l. and for adventure sports or trekking. This ensures you're protected during iconic hikes like the Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, or Ausangate Trek.

Sustainability & Community Responsibility
At Inside Peru Adventures, sustainability isn’t just a value — it’s a way of life. Our tours are designed with deep respect for nature, culture, and people. We proudly follow the principles of responsible travel in Peru to protect the destinations we love and empower the communities we partner with.
  • Eco-Friendly Adventure Travel: We follow Leave No Trace guidelines and minimize our environmental footprint across every tour. From trekking to cultural immersion, we prioritize low-impact experiences that help preserve Peru’s diverse ecosystems, from high-Andean trails to tropical forests and coastal deserts.
  • Plastic-Free Philosophy: We actively promote a plastic-free travel experience. Bring your reusable water bottle—please check if water refills are included in this tour under the Inclusions section. On treks and hikes where this service is provided, we’ll help you keep it full along the way. Reducing single-use plastic is one of the simplest and most powerful steps we take toward a greener Peru.
  • Respect for Local Culture & Traditions: Every destination we visit is treated with reverence. We engage with indigenous communities, sacred sites, and ancestral customs in a way that is ethical and culturally sensitive. Our team educates travelers on cultural respect to ensure tourism strengthens—not disrupts—local heritage.
Community Empowerment & Fair Tourism: We believe in tourism that gives back. Every tour you book helps generate fair and sustainable income for local guides, craftswomen, organic farmers, transport providers, and indigenous cooperatives. We prioritize hiring local, sourcing handmade, and supporting projects that uplift Peru’s living cultural heritage

Here’s a breakdown of physical activity throughout the trip:

  • Days 1–7, 9,10: Easy to moderate walking through historical sites like Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu, with plenty of breaks and transportation support.

  • Day 8: You’ll embark on a scenic but physically demanding hike to either Rainbow Mountain, Humantay Lagoon, or the 7 Lakes of Ausangate — reaching altitudes above 4,000 m (13,000 ft). The hike involves steep inclines and variable terrain.

Yes. Horse rentals are available at the trailhead and are managed by local community members. Horses can help you reach close to the summit but cannot go all the way up due to steep and narrow terrain.

Note: Horse rental is not included in our tour package and must be arranged in person on-site.

The Peru Essence – 10D/9N itinerary is thoughtfully designed to help your body gradually adjust to the altitude, minimizing discomfort and reducing the risk of altitude sickness.

Here’s how each day supports acclimatization:

  • Day 4 – Sacred Valley Exploration (Pisaq & Moray): You descend to a lower altitude (~2,900 m / 9,500 ft), making this an ideal acclimatization day with easy archaeological walks.
  • Day 5 – Maras Salt Mines, Ollantaytambo & Train to Aguas Calientes: You continue cultural visits, then descend even further (2,040 m / 6,692 ft) as you reach Aguas Calientes.
  • Day 6 – Machu Picchu Guided Tour: You explore the citadel at moderate elevation in relaxed conditions, with plenty of time for rest and photos.
  • Day 7 – Return to Cusco & Light Exploration: You return by train and vehicle to Cusco, with optional light activity or free time to shop, eat, or rest.
  • Day 8 – Adventure Hike (Rainbow Mountain / Humantay Lagoon / 7 Lakes of Ausangate): You are now well acclimatized for your high-altitude hike to above 4,000 m (13,000 ft).
