Highlights
This full-day Ausangate 7 Lakes Hike invites travelers to discover one of the most stunning high-altitude circuits in the Peruvian Andes. The journey begins in Pacchanta (4,300 m.a.s.l. / 14,108 ft) and leads through the breathtaking Vilcanota mountain range, surrounded by dramatic glaciers, remote Andean valleys, and pristine alpine air. As you trek up to 4,800 m.a.s.l. (15,748 ft), you'll encounter a dazzling circuit of glacial lakes—Azulcocha, Otorongo, Pucacocha, Alqacocha, Q'omercocha, China Otorongo, and Orco Otorongo—each reflecting a different hue of turquoise or emerald, sculpted by millennia of glacial activity.
Along the route, you’ll stand before the towering sacred peaks of Ausangate (6,384 m.a.s.l. / 20,945 ft), Mariposa (5,842 m.a.s.l. / 19,167 ft), Jampa (5,500 m.a.s.l. / 18,044 ft), and Pucapunta (5,740 m.a.s.l. / 18,832 ft), revered by local communities and deeply embedded in Andean cosmology. The trek also offers rare wildlife encounters—such as herds of alpacas and llamas, and, with luck, glimpses of vicuñas roaming freely across the slopes or soaring Andean condors gliding overhead. These pristine ecosystems are among the most biodiverse and untouched in Peru.
Far from mass tourism, this is an opportunity to connect with authentic Quechua-speaking communities, where families still live in harmony with the mountains, preserving ancestral knowledge through weaving, agriculture, and alpaca herding. After a rewarding hike, you’ll return to Pacchanta to enjoy a relaxing soak in its natural thermal baths, with majestic views of Ausangate—an unforgettable way to end your adventure.
Led by expert bilingual guides from Inside Peru Adventures, this experience ensures safety, immersion, and interpretation of local geology, culture, and spirituality. With small group sizes (max 16 travelers), you’ll enjoy personalized attention, smoother logistics, and the chance to deeply connect with nature and fellow hikers in one of Peru’s most awe-inspiring destinations.
Itinerary
We’ll begin this high-altitude adventure with a 3:00 AM hotel pickup in Cusco, heading southeast by private transport for approximately 3.5 hours to the remote village of Pacchanta, located at 4,300 m.a.s.l. (14,108 ft). As we leave the city lights behind, you'll witness the Andean dawn painting the sky over the majestic Vilcanota mountain range.
Upon arrival in Pacchanta, a nourishing buffet breakfast awaits, energizing us for the day ahead. After a briefing from your expert local guide, we’ll start our scenic circular trek through the heart of the Ausangate region—home to some of the most stunning glacial lakes in the Andes.
Our route spans around 15 km (9.3 mi) and takes approximately 5 hours to complete. We’ll pass by the breathtaking Azulcocha, Otorongo, China Otorongo, Pucacocha, Alqacocha, Q’omercocha, and Orco Otorongo—each lake dazzling with its own tone of turquoise, emerald, or deep sapphire. Towering above us are the sacred snow-capped peaks of Ausangate (6,384 m.a.s.l. / 20,945 ft), Mariposa, Jampa, and Pucapunta, forming an unforgettable mountain panorama.
Along the trail, you'll encounter numerous alpacas and llamas grazing freely. If you’re lucky and quiet, you might even spot vicuñas—wild, elusive camelids native to this region—and perhaps a distant Andean condor soaring overhead. While sightings of condors and vicuñas are rare, they’re not impossible, especially in the quieter corners of the trail.
After completing the circuit, we return to Pacchanta where you’ll be rewarded with a soothing soak in the natural hot springs, offering relaxing thermal waters with unmatched views of Ausangate and the surrounding highland wilderness.
Finally, we’ll enjoy a traditional Andean buffet lunch, freshly prepared with locally sourced ingredients. As the day winds down, we’ll begin our drive back to Cusco, arriving by late afternoon with a heart full of memories from this incredible off-the-beaten-path experience.

Travel Info
Many of our tours explore the breathtaking highlands of the Andes in Peru, where altitudes range from 3,000 to over 5,000 m.a.s.l. (9,840–17,060 ft). For reference:
Cusco: 3,400 m.a.s.l. (11,150 ft)
Pacchanta (starting point): 4,300 m.a.s.l. (14,108 ft)
Highest point on the trail: 4,800 m.a.s.l. (15,748 ft)
These extreme altitudes make the 7 Lakes Hike in Ausangate a breathtaking adventure—both physically and visually. For travelers arriving from sea level or low-altitude regions, these elevations demand proper preparation to avoid altitude sickness and to fully enjoy the immersive experience of trekking in the Vilcanota mountain range..
Why Acclimatization Matters
Altitude sickness can affect anyone—regardless of age or fitness level. Symptoms like headaches, dizziness, and fatigue are common when ascending too quickly. That’s why we strongly recommend arriving at least one full day in Cusco before starting any tour or trek.
Starting with a moderate, half-day tour like City Tour, Sacred Valley Tour or Maras & Moray Tour gives your body time to adapt gradually while you explore unique archaeological landscapes and Inca ingenuity without strenuous physical effort.
Pro Tip for Trekking Travelers: Planning to hike legendary trails like the Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, Lares Trek, or Ausangate Trek? Or visit iconic high-altitude sites like Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley, Palccoyo, Pallay Punchu, 7 Lakes in Ausangate or Humantay Lagoon?
Begin your journey with a cultural acclimatization tour such as City Tour, Sacred Valley Tour or Maras & Moray Tour. These provide gentle exposure to altitude while enriching your travel experience with history, nature, and living culture.
Stay Healthy at Altitude: To minimize the effects of altitude and make the most of your tour:
Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Avoid heavy meals before the tour.
Get a good night’s rest beforehand.
Enjoy traditional coca tea, known to help naturally with high-altitude adaptation.
The 7 Lakes Hike in Ausangate is one of the most rewarding high-altitude treks in the Peruvian Andes. Reaching a maximum elevation of 4,800 m.a.s.l. (15,748 ft), this full-day loop challenges hikers not by distance alone, but by the effects of altitude and thinner air common at over 4,000 m.a.s.l. (13,123 ft). The total distance is around 15 km (9.3 mi) and takes approximately 5 hours to complete, with gradual ascents, rolling highland terrain, and short steeper sections as you navigate the route through breathtaking alpine scenery.
While technically non-demanding (no climbing skills required), the 7 Lagoons of Ausangate hike is classified as moderate due to the elevation. Hikers coming from sea level or low-altitude areas must take acclimatization seriously. Spending at least 2 full days in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the trek is strongly recommended to help your body adjust to high-altitude conditions and reduce the risk of altitude sickness.
The route offers a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and physical challenge, taking you past glacial lagoons, sacred Andean peaks, and herds of alpacas and llamas grazing in peaceful valleys. Though elusive, vicuñas and condors may also be spotted if you're lucky.
Trekking poles are highly recommended for balance on rocky or muddy sections and to ease the descent, especially if you’re not used to hiking at high elevations. Inside Peru Adventures offers trekking pole rentals to make your journey more comfortable and safe.
If you’re looking for a full-day hike from Cusco that delivers spectacular landscapes, cultural authenticity, and the satisfaction of pushing your limits in the heart of the Vilcanota mountain range, the 7 Lakes Ausangate Trek is the perfect choice.
Know the Climate Before You Go: Weather in the Andes of Peru is shaped by altitude and seasonal patterns—not by typical tropical rules. Understanding the conditions helps you pack smarter and travel more comfortably.
Dry Season (Best Travel Time): April to October
Expect clear skies, abundant sunshine, and minimal rainfall. Daytime temperatures can feel warm under the sun, while mornings and evenings are cooler—especially at higher elevations.
Rainy Season: December to February
Characterized by frequent rain showers, cloudy skies, and lush landscapes. Travel is still possible, but weather can be unpredictable.
Shoulder Months (Transitional Weather): March and November
These months often bring a mix of sunny days and occasional rain. Packing for both dry and wet conditions is highly recommended.
Smart Packing Essentials for the 7 Lakes Ausangate Hike
Dress in Layers:
Temperatures fluctuate dramatically between early morning departures and midday hikes. Start with thermal layers, add a fleece or insulated jacket, and carry a waterproof outer shell. Breathable and moisture-wicking fabrics are key for high-altitude trekking in Peru.
Sun Protection at High Altitude:
At elevations reaching 4,800 m.a.s.l. (15,748 ft), UV radiation is intense—even under cloud cover. Bring:
High-SPF sunscreen
UV-rated sunglasses
Wide-brim hat or cap
Lip balm with SPF protection
Rain Gear (Year-Round):
Sudden showers are common, even in the dry season. A lightweight rain poncho or waterproof jacket is essential. Water-resistant backpack covers are also a smart addition.
Footwear:
Wear sturdy trekking boots with excellent grip and ankle support. The terrain near Rainbow Mountain and through Red Valley includes steep inclines, rocky paths, and potential mud—especially during or after rain.
Lightweight Gloves & Warm Hat:
Cold morning temperatures and wind near Ausangate range require thermal gloves and a warm hat. These help you retain body heat and stay comfortable during breaks or slower-paced ascents.
Reusable Water Bottle or Hydration Pack:
Staying hydrated is essential at high elevations. Bring a refillable water bottle or hydration pack to sip water steadily throughout your hike. Please check the Inclusions section to see if water refills are provided on this tour—otherwise, make sure to carry enough water for the day. Avoid single-use plastics to support sustainable trekking practices.
Energy Snacks:
The trail requires sustained physical effort. Bring compact snacks like protein bars, dried fruits, or chocolate to boost your energy during the climb. Natural sugar and carbs can help counteract altitude fatigue.
Trekking Poles:
Highly recommended, especially for descending slopes and uneven terrain. Trekking poles improve balance, reduce knee strain, and offer added support on rocky or muddy paths. Inside Peru Adventures offers trekking poles for rent to make your hike more comfortable.
At Inside Peru Adventures, your well-being comes first. Whether you're exploring the Sacred Valley, trekking the Andes, or visiting remote destinations in the highlands, we ensure your journey is not only unforgettable—but also safe, supported, and professionally managed.
Trained & Certified Guides: All of our professional tour guides are certified in first aid and emergency response, with regular training in high-altitude safety, evacuation protocols, and outdoor risk management. This ensures they're fully prepared to handle any situation—from minor injuries to altitude-related discomfort.
First-Aid Kits on Every Tour: We carry a fully equipped first-aid kit on every excursion, including supplies for common travel issues such as scrapes, blisters, motion sickness, insect bites, and altitude symptoms.
Oxygen & Altitude Support: On all tours that venture above 3,000 m.a.s.l. (9,840 ft)—including popular routes like the Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, Humantay Lagoon Hike, Rainbow Mountain & Red Valley Hike, Lares Trek and Ausangate Trek—our guides are equipped with portable oxygen tanks. They’re trained to monitor and respond to altitude-related symptoms, providing immediate relief when needed.
Emergency Transport Access: All our routes are carefully selected not only for beauty and cultural value, but also for emergency accessibility. In the unlikely event of a medical emergency, we have established response plans with local authorities and transport services for rapid evacuation.
Why Travel Insurance Matters for Adventure Travel
While Inside Peru Adventures prioritizes safety and preparation on every journey, the nature of adventure travel always carries a degree of unpredictability. For your peace of mind, we highly recommend securing comprehensive travel insurance before your trip.
What Should Your Policy Cover?
When exploring high-altitude regions or remote natural landscapes, make sure your insurance plan includes:
Altitude sickness and medical emergencies
Trip cancellations or itinerary interruptions
Weather-related delays or disruptions
Emergency evacuation and repatriation
Lost or delayed luggage
Coverage for adventure travel activities like trekking, hiking, and off-the-beaten-path exploration
Adventure destinations often involve rugged terrain, high elevation, and changing weather. A proper adventure travel insurance policy ensures you're covered in case of unexpected incidents. We recommend choosing a provider experienced in insuring active travelers and reviewing all terms carefully.
Pro Tip for Trekking Travelers: Not all travel insurance policies automatically cover high-altitude adventures. When choosing a plan, verify that your provider includes coverage for activities above 3,000 m.a.s.l. and for adventure sports or trekking. This ensures you're protected during iconic hikes like the Inca Trail, Salkantay Trek, or Ausangate Trek.
- Eco-Friendly Adventure Travel: We follow Leave No Trace guidelines and minimize our environmental footprint across every tour. From trekking to cultural immersion, we prioritize low-impact experiences that help preserve Peru’s diverse ecosystems, from high-Andean trails to tropical forests and coastal deserts.
- Plastic-Free Philosophy: We actively promote a plastic-free travel experience. Bring your reusable water bottle—please check if water refills are included in this tour under the Inclusions section. On treks and hikes where this service is provided, we’ll help you keep it full along the way. Reducing single-use plastic is one of the simplest and most powerful steps we take toward a greener Peru.
- Respect for Local Culture & Traditions: Every destination we visit is treated with reverence. We engage with indigenous communities, sacred sites, and ancestral customs in a way that is ethical and culturally sensitive. Our team educates travelers on cultural respect to ensure tourism strengthens—not disrupts—local heritage.
- Community Empowerment & Fair Tourism: We believe in tourism that gives back. Every tour you book helps generate fair and sustainable income for local guides, craftswomen, organic farmers, transport providers, and indigenous cooperatives. We prioritize hiring local, sourcing handmade, and supporting projects that uplift Peru’s living cultural heritage

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Inside Peru Adventures is your trusted partner for authentic and sustainable trekking experiences in Peru. We are committed to small-group adventures, exceptional service, and cultural immersion. Our bilingual, first-aid-certified guides are experts in high-altitude treks and ensure your safety every step of the way. We support local communities, practice eco-friendly tourism, and deliver a truly transformational travel experience across the Andes.
The 7 Lakes of Ausangate hike is considered moderate in difficulty. The trail reaches altitudes of up to 4,800 m.a.s.l. (15,748 ft), which can pose a challenge due to thinner air and reduced oxygen levels. However, the hike is relatively short in distance, with most of the ascent done by vehicle or optional horse ride. We recommend spending at least two days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley before the hike. A good fitness level is helpful, especially for those coming from sea level.
Yes. Horse rentals are available at the trailhead in Pacchanta and are managed directly by local community members.
The horses can carry you up to the main viewpoint near the highest lake, but the final short section (approx. 5–10 minutes) requires walking.
Horse rental prices vary and must be paid in cash on-site.
Note: Horse rental is not included in our tour package and must be arranged in person on-site.
Altitude sickness is a real concern at high elevations in Peru. To reduce risks, we recommend the following acclimatization plan:
Day 1: Rest in Cusco (3,400 m) or enjoy a gentle City Tour or Walking Tour.
Day 2: Take a Sacred Valley Tour or Maras & Moray Tour to gradually increase elevation.
Day 3: Ready for your 7 Lakes Hike in Ausangate!
To prevent altitude issues:
✔ Drink plenty of water and coca tea.
✔ Eat light meals and avoid alcohol.
✔ Walk at a slow, steady pace.
✔ Bring any personal altitude medication if prescribed.
Temperatures vary significantly depending on the time of day and season:
Early morning (start of trek): As low as -3°C to -5°C (26°F to 23°F), especially during the dry season. Thermal layers, gloves, and hats are essential.
Midday: Temperatures can rise to 12–18°C (54–64°F) under the sun, but wind chills may reduce comfort.
Weather changes: Sudden rain, wind, or even snow are possible. Always pack a waterproof layer and dress in layers to adapt to the changing conditions.
Due to the altitude and physical challenge, this trek is best for children aged 10+ with experience in hiking and proper acclimatization. Parents should assess their child’s stamina and readiness for high-altitude trekking. We do not recommend this trek for infants or toddlers.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from April to October, offering clear skies, stable conditions, and stunning reflections on the lakes.
Month | Recommendation |
January – March | ❌ Not Recommended (Heavy rains, clouds) |
April | ✅ Good (End of rainy season) |
May – October | ⭐ Best (Dry season, best views) |
November – December | ✅ Good (Start of rainy season) |
Note: While the rainy season brings lush landscapes, trail conditions can be muddy and less predictable.
The day begins with a pick-up from your hotel in Cusco at 3:00 AM. We drive approximately 3.5 hours to reach the village of Pacchanta, where you’ll enjoy breakfast and get ready for the trek. The hike follows a scenic circuit past seven stunning glacial lakes nestled in the Ausangate range.
For private tours, pick-up from the Sacred Valley is available upon request (additional cost applies).
Inside Peru Adventures offers an exclusive experience with a maximum 16 hikers per group, unlike mass tours with 30+ people. What makes us stand out:
Expert local guides trained in altitude management and first aid.
Emergency oxygen and medical support are always available.
