Machu Picchu Additional Hikes

Inside Peru Adventures

Understand the difference between Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain, and Huchuy Picchu — and choose which one is right for you.

For many travelers, visiting Machu Picchu is already the highlight of the journey. But for those who want to go one step further, there are additional mountain hikes that offer different perspectives of the citadel and surrounding landscape.

At Inside Peru Adventures, we help travelers understand the differences between Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain, and Huchuy Picchu so they can choose the option that best matches their interests, physical level, and overall travel style.

Each route is different in terms of access, difficulty, duration, viewpoints, and overall experience. These hikes are optional and subject to availability, so it is always important to request them in advance.

The Three Optional Hikes

Option 1

Huayna Picchu

The Classic Steep Peak Behind the Citadel

The famous mountain that appears behind Machu Picchu in many classic postcard views. Known for being steeper, narrower, and more adventurous than the others. Ideal for travelers who want a thrilling mountain experience and a dramatic elevated perspective over Machu Picchu.

Good to know

  • Considered one of the more demanding optional hikes
  • The trail includes steep sections and stone steps
  • Not ideal for travelers with a strong fear of heights
  • Availability is very limited
Best for Travelers wanting the classic iconic add-on and a more adventurous mountain experience.
Option 2

Machu Picchu Mountain

The Highest and Most Expansive Viewpoint

A different experience from Huayna Picchu — generally less steep in feeling, but longer and more sustained. Takes travelers higher above the citadel and offers wide, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and landscape.

Good to know

  • Usually takes longer than Huchuy Picchu
  • Requires good stamina — the ascent is sustained
  • A strong but more spacious alternative to Huayna Picchu
  • Less narrow trail than Huayna Picchu
Best for Travelers who want a scenic uphill challenge with broad panoramic views.
Option 3

Huchuy Picchu

A Shorter and Gentler Optional Hike

The shortest and generally easiest of the three additional mountain options. Offers beautiful elevated views and is a great option for travelers who want something extra beyond the main Machu Picchu visit, but without committing to a longer or more demanding ascent.

Good to know

  • Shorter and less demanding than the other two
  • Still requires a special entry ticket
  • Availability can also be limited
  • Ideal for a lighter add-on experience
Best for Travelers who want an easier optional hike with beautiful views and less physical strain.

Comparison at a Glance

Route Difficulty Experience Best For
Huayna Picchu Steeper and more adventurous Iconic and dramatic Travelers wanting thrill and classic views
Machu Picchu Mountain Longer and more demanding Highest and most panoramic Travelers wanting broad mountain views
Huchuy Picchu Easier and shorter Light scenic add-on Travelers wanting a gentler hike

Important Note for IPA Travelers

Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain may be added to your itinerary for US$75 per person, subject to official ticket availability. Because these spaces are limited and government-regulated, early request is strongly recommended.

Huchuy Picchu is also subject to current circuit rules and official availability. Final confirmation always depends on the regulations and ticket availability in effect at the time of booking.

Which One Should You Choose?

  • Choose Huayna Picchu if you want the most iconic and adventurous feeling.
  • Choose Machu Picchu Mountain if you prefer a panoramic mountain climb with a broader sense of space.
  • Choose Huchuy Picchu if you want a shorter, easier, and lighter optional hike.

At Inside Peru Adventures, we are happy to help you choose the Machu Picchu add-on that best fits your pace, expectations, and itinerary.
