Huayna Picchu
The Classic Steep Peak Behind the Citadel
The famous mountain that appears behind Machu Picchu in many classic postcard views. Known for being steeper, narrower, and more adventurous than the others. Ideal for travelers who want a thrilling mountain experience and a dramatic elevated perspective over Machu Picchu.
Good to know
- Considered one of the more demanding optional hikes
- The trail includes steep sections and stone steps
- Not ideal for travelers with a strong fear of heights
- Availability is very limited
Machu Picchu Mountain
The Highest and Most Expansive Viewpoint
A different experience from Huayna Picchu — generally less steep in feeling, but longer and more sustained. Takes travelers higher above the citadel and offers wide, panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and landscape.
Good to know
- Usually takes longer than Huchuy Picchu
- Requires good stamina — the ascent is sustained
- A strong but more spacious alternative to Huayna Picchu

Huchuy Picchu
A Shorter and Gentler Optional Hike
