Difficulty Levels

Inside Peru Adventures

Understand the physical level of our journeys before you travel. From easy cultural tours to challenging high-altitude treks, this guide explains the level of effort, pace, and preparation each experience may require.

Choose the Journey That Fits You Best — At Inside Peru Adventures, we believe travelers should feel informed and confident before choosing a journey.

Not every trip in Peru feels the same. Some itineraries are gentle, scenic, and comfort-based, while others involve altitude, hiking, longer active days, or more demanding terrain. Some journeys remain quite consistent from beginning to end, while others combine more relaxed days with more physically challenging sections.

That is why we classify our experiences according to pace, terrain, altitude, and overall physical effort — helping travelers choose the option that best matches their comfort level, travel style, and expectations.

Our goal is not to make travel feel intimidating. It is to make it feel clear, realistic, and well prepared from the beginning.

What Influences a Journey's Difficulty?

Difficulty is not determined by distance alone. A journey may feel more or less demanding depending on:

  • Altitude and elevation gain
  • Terrain and trail conditions
  • Length of activity and hiking hours
  • Weather conditions
  • Pace and overall structure of the itinerary

For example, a short route at very high altitude may feel harder than a longer walk at lower elevation. A multi-day itinerary may also combine easier days with more strenuous ones, which is why some experiences are best described as Moderate to Challenging rather than simply moderate or difficult.

Difficulty is a guide — and in Peru, altitude often changes everything.

Our Difficulty Levels

Level 1

Relaxing

Comfortable, Scenic, and Easy to Enjoy

Ideal for travelers looking for a gentler pace, light activity, and lower physical demand. These journeys are usually focused on culture, scenic exploration, guided visits, comfortable transportation, and easy-to-manage walking.

You can expect:

  • Light walking
  • Comfortable pacing
  • Accessible sightseeing
  • Low physical strain overall
Best for Travelers who prefer a relaxed rhythm, cultural immersion, and a more comfort-focused experience.
Level 2

Moderate

Active, Manageable, and Well Balanced

Designed for travelers who are comfortable with active days, moderate walking, and a steady pace. These experiences may include full-day touring, more walking than a relaxing itinerary, some uneven surfaces, stairs, moderate altitude exposure, or a longer day of activity.

You can expect:

  • Moderate walking
  • A fuller day of movement
  • Some mild physical effort
  • Active but non-strenuous pacing
Best for Travelers who enjoy being active but do not want a high-altitude trek or highly strenuous route.
Level 3

Moderate to Challenging

A Mixed Journey with Both Active and Demanding Sections

Best for travelers comfortable with itineraries that combine more manageable days with more physically demanding sections. Especially useful for routes where not every day is equally difficult — some days are scenic and steady, while others involve higher altitude, longer active hours, or more challenging terrain.

You can expect:

  • A combination of moderate and stronger activity
  • Selected days with greater physical demand
  • Some altitude challenge
  • A route that may vary in intensity day to day
Best for Travelers in good condition who are prepared for a journey that is not constantly intense, but does include some more demanding sections.
Level 4

Challenging

Demanding Routes for Strong, Well-Prepared Travelers

Our more strenuous experiences, best suited for travelers in strong physical condition who are ready for higher, more constant physical demand. These routes often involve sustained trekking, longer hiking days, high-altitude exposure, steeper ascents and descents, and more demanding mountain conditions overall.

You can expect:

  • Long and physically demanding active days
  • More sustained trekking effort
  • Stronger altitude effects
  • A more strenuous overall experience
Best for Travelers in strong physical condition who are ready for a more serious trekking challenge and sustained effort across the journey.

Altitude Changes the Experience

In Peru, altitude is one of the most important factors in how difficult a journey feels.

A route that might seem manageable on paper can feel much harder when done at elevation. Cusco itself is already at high altitude, and many routes go even higher. That is why acclimatization is especially important for moderate, moderate-to-challenging, and challenging journeys.

At Inside Peru Adventures, we always encourage travelers to consider:

  • Altitude and how your body responds to elevation
  • Number of active days in the itinerary
  • Previous hiking or trekking experience
  • Terrain and trail conditions
  • Personal comfort with physical effort

A well-matched journey almost always creates a better experience than an overly ambitious one.

Difficulty Is Also Personal

Difficulty levels are meant to guide, not judge.

What feels moderate to one traveler may feel challenging to another. Fitness, age, previous hiking experience, altitude response, and personal travel habits all make a difference. Some travelers prefer pushing themselves. Others prefer slower pacing and more comfort. Both are valid.

That is why we recommend choosing your journey honestly and thoughtfully. The best trip is not the hardest one — it is the one that feels right for you.

If you are unsure which difficulty level fits you best, we are happy to help. At Inside Peru Adventures, we believe choosing the right journey should feel supportive, not confusing.

Understanding the physical level of your journey is one of the best ways to prepare for a better travel experience in Peru.

At Inside Peru Adventures, we want every traveler to choose a route that feels exciting, realistic, and rewarding — whether that means a relaxing cultural day, an active scenic journey, a mixed moderate-to-challenging route, or a demanding high-altitude adventure.

The right journey is not necessarily the hardest one. It is the one that fits you best.
